Hurricane Earl is a Category 4 storm that at 5 a.m. was east of the Bahamas and headed to the North Carolina coast, where it is expected to pass near the Outer Banks tonight and approach southeastern New England Friday night.

For now, the skinny black line keeps the hurricane’s eye off the coast, but a western shift in the track can’t yet be ruled out, according to the National Hurricane Center. Earl has maximum sustained winds of 145 mph and is moving north at 18 mph.

While Earl was a Category 4 at 5 a.m., forecasters say the expect it to gradually weaken starting later today.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Fiona is 295 miles north of San Juan Puerto Rico with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. The storm is moving at 17 mph. Fiona is expected to pass near Bermuda Saturday morning.

Finally, Tropical Storm Gaston is more than 2,800 miles to our southeast. And while it’s expected to gradually strengthen over the next two days, it’s so far away that it will be well into next week before it could influence our local forecast.
